My Special Guest Tonight is…

Edgar Allan Poe and A Dream Within a Dream

I’m back to the grind stone tomorrow so I thought I’d add a last post, and when I say last I only mean for a few days. So I thought I’d give my mind a rest and ask one of my favourites to do the honours.

Yes, he’s back again. I do like EAP. He has been my special guest before when I posted one of my favourite poems of his, ‘The Raven’.

According to Wikipedia, this ‘poem dramatises a confusion in watching the important things in life slip away. Realising he cannot hold on to even one grain of sand leads to his final question that all things are a dream.’

For me it’s as simple as a dream being remembered and writing on a page. Lucid, surreal, fantastic and a little sad.

Hope you enjoy.

A Dream within a Dream

Take this kiss upon the brow!

And, in parting from you now,

Thus much let me avow —

You are not wrong, who deem

That my days have been a dream;

Yet if hope has flown away

In a night, or in a day,

In a vision, or in none,

Is it therefore the less gone?

All that we see or seem

Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar

Of a surf-tormented shore,

And I hold within my hand

Grains of the golden sand —

How few! yet how they creep

Through my fingers to the deep,

While I weep — while I weep!

O God! Can I not grasp

Them with a tighter clasp?

O God! can I not save

One from the pitiless wave?

Is all that we see or seem

But a dream within a dream?
