Jukebox Jingles

I’ve been slow to continue with my Songs from the Movies theme this year as I’ve been wondering about its value but I am a big movie fan. So; I’ve decided to get back to the movie posts, add a little je ne sais quoi and hope for the best.

Likewise, I’m very partial to a good tune as well so today is a new attempt at sprucing up the old blog and raising the stakes with a bit of extra entertainment. With the success I had over Christmas with my ‘Jingle’ posts I thought I’d try and expand my idea of the ‘Jingle’ with a soupçon of middle-aged cleverness.

After all I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again poetry comes in all forms and lyrics are no exception.

Trust me though, there won’t be a Spice Girl in sight (chuckle).

I hope you enjoy my first Jukebox Jingle. I love this song as, although it is very poignant to a lot of life’s thoughts and feelings, the music in the chorus seems to be quite the opposite to the lyrics being sung. I find it very uplifting, being more upbeat and almost inspiring.

You may also notice something extra at the end; I hope you enjoy.

Ironic

by Alanis Morissette and Glen Ballard

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It’s a black fly in your Chardonnay
It’s a death row pardon two minutes too late
Isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?

It’s like rain on your wedding day
It’s a free ride when you’ve already paid
It’s the good advice that you just didn’t take
And who would’ve thought, it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids’ goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
“Well, isn’t this nice”

And isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?
It’s like rain on your wedding day
It’s a free ride when you’ve already paid
It’s the good advice that you just didn’t take
And who would’ve thought, it figures

Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything’s okay and everything’s going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything’s gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

A traffic jam when you’re already late
A “no smoking” sign on your cigarette break
It’s like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It’s meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?
A little too ironic, and yeah I really do think

It’s like rain on your wedding day
It’s a free ride when you’ve already paid
It’s the good advice that you just didn’t take
And who would’ve thought, it figures

Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
And life has a funny way of helping you out
Helping you out

Jagged Little Pill was always a firm return-to favourite at work those last five years of the nineties; it could really set a vibe up around the shop – sassy, sexy, solid songs – a soundtrack of a period. I heard it last in its entirety about ten years ago and it still does, I think, what it claims to on the label.

Beautifully aged, too. And the album!
